The dead bolt on the door beckoned Chris, and he snapped the lock home. Though he doubted D.J. was the type to do so; he was taking no chances she might decide to follow him and explain herself. Right now he didn't want to hear it.
Never mind that he'd been about to unburden his secrets to her; the fact that she already knew them infuriated Chris beyond measure.
How long had she known? Was the softening he'd sensed in her nature a result of pity for the poor orphaned child he'd been? Still was, actually, and always would be. The though of D.J. learning about his childhood terrors in the form of an investigative report compiled by another "just the facts, ma'am" cop, then hiding her knowledge from him for who knew how long, increased Christian's fury.
